Conclusions and Next Essay

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

After today I should be able to:

Reading: Read one book by September 29th.

Agenda:

  1. Vocabulary Word of the Day
  2. Read silently for 10 minutes
  3. Synthesis Essay #1
    1. Synthesis essay conclusions
      1. We will also add a conclusion to our essay.
        1. Conclusions should be idea and action based
        2. Think about some personal experiences you have had that hold emotional weight and logically relate to the topic of your paper and your argument. If you don't have an experience of your own, think of someone that you know.
        3. Begin to produce up to 4 sentences that tell the story or stories from step 2 while connecting those stories to the ideas of step 1.
          1. My high school girlfriend and I often found ourselves drifting apart due to misunderstandings. We both assumed the other knew what we were thinking, but without open communication, our assumptions led to hurt feelings and resentment.
        4. Shift from talking about yourself to talking about people and individuals outside of yourself.
        5. Include a snippet of a pertinent quote from one of the sources that is no more than six words.
        6. Leave a glass slipper. Consider what you want your audience to do.
          1. You can use the phrase "In a world where..."
          2. In a world where teenagers are notorious for their lack of communication skills, dating in high school is often a tumultuous experience. As one of their teachers note, “dating in high school is not very wise.” Marc and Carly, both still figuring out who they are, might find it more beneficial to wait until they are older to navigate the complexities of a serious relationship.
        7. Here is the conclusion all together:
          1. My high school girlfriend and I often found ourselves drifting apart due to misunderstandings. We both assumed the other knew what we were thinking, but without open communication, our assumptions led to hurt feelings and resentment. In a world where teenagers are notorious for their lack of communication skills, dating in high school is often a tumultuous experience. Write a body paragraph on your own

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

After today I should be able to:

Reading: Read one book by September 29th.

Agenda:

  1. Vocabulary Word of the Day
  2. Read silently for 10 minutes
  3. Vocabulary review game
  4. Synthesis Essay
    1. Padlet wall with evidence from each source.
    2. Write a body paragraph on your own. You may choose the topic and the evidence you want to use.
    3. We will vote on which body paragraph we think is the best.
    4. Here is a body paragraph you can use as a model:
      1. Another factor Carly should consider is Marc’s loyalty to her because if a guy is not loyal in a relationship then it could be a sign that he does not take the relationship seriously. Marc’s actions on Friday night should make Carly question his loyalty and make her reevaluate his commitment to her. For example, Marc writes in his schedule that he is going with Anna to a bonfire at Matt’s that will last until 1 A.M. while Carly is away at a basketball game.  Both the fact that he is staying out late and going with Anna suggests that something more may be going on between him and Anna. While at the bonfire Marc takes a picture with Anna on his back, which she posts to Instagram with the tag “#lovehim” and the comment “he’s always got my back.” Marc’s willingness to take this picture with Anna, knowing that he is in a relationship with Carly and that Anna likes him, shows he is not as loyal to Carly as she thought. This evidence demonstrates that Marc is not being honest about the kind of relationship he has with Anna and that he is willing to flirt with other girls while Carly is busy with her sport. Consequently if Marc is willing to be flirtatious while Anna is away, Carly should ask herself how committed he is to their relationship, especially because Carly does not flirt with other guys when Marc is not around. Therefore, due to fact that Marc is not as serious about the relationship, she should question if she can continue in a relationship that  lacks the solid foundation of loyalty to the other person.

Writing a Partner Paragraph

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

After today I should be able to:

Reading: Read one book by September 29th.

Agenda:

  1. Vocabulary Word of the Day
  2. Read silently for 10 minutes
  3. Synthesis Essay
    1. Padlet wall with evidence from each source.
    2. Write a body paragraph with a partner
      1. Your paragraph should be just like the one we wrote last week except you will change the topic.
      2. Your body paragraph will be about loyalty.
      3. Use the following two pieces of evidence in your paragraph:
        1. Source G: Marc and Anna are hanging out at Matt's bonfire and in the picture Anna posts she is on Marc's back. She also uses the tags "#bestie" and "#lovehim". She also says "he's always got my back!" Anna had posted this knowing that he is in a relationship. Marc is being disloyal to Carly through these actions of not mentioning any problems about this.
        2. Source A: Marc is hanging out with a girl who clearly likes him at 1 am while Carly is away at a basketball game, which suggests they're more than just friends, given they're not just "hanging out" at Matt's. This is a clear breach of loyalty within a relationship.

      2. Describe the current state of Marc and Carly's relationship.
      3. Write your thesis statement.
    3. Write a body paragraph.
      1. Sample body paragraph
        1. Communication is a crucial factor for Carly to consider when deciding whether to stay with Marc because it will help them resolve their conflicts. Currently, Marc and Carly seem to be having significant communication problems, especially about if one of them is cheating on the other. For instance, Danielle states, “I was told by Lindsey that Carly was cheating on you with John. But you know how Lindsey can be…” This statement indicates that Marc is relying on hearsay from a potentially unreliable source, suggesting a breakdown in communication between him and Carly. Additionally, Anna, who is a jealous friend of Marc and Carly, states that “Marc is convinced that Carly is cheating on him because Carly has been with John for the last two nights.” Rather than communicating with Carly, Marc is letting himself be swayed by conflicting accounts of Carly’s faithfulness. This evidence suggests that Marc is making assumptions without seeking clarification from Carly, leading to misunderstandings and potential conflict. Consequently, if Carly and Marc cannot improve their communication skills, their relationship will fall apart. Therefore, effective communication is essential for resolving their current conflicts and building a stronger foundation for the future.

    1. write three journals from Odysseus's perspective about his adventure with the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Cattle of the Sun. Each journal entry should be between 7-10 sentences. Here is an example about his time on Calypso's island:
      1. Another dawn breaks over this gilded cage I am forced to call home. Calypso offers me a goddess's love and the gift of immortality, a paradise of endless summer. But her kindness is a chain and her affection a prison. Each day I walk the shores of Ogygia, watching the free seabirds, and I am filled with a sharp jealousy. This beautiful island is not my home; my life, the one I built with my own hands, is in Ithaca with my Penelope and our son, Telemachus.
      2. At night, amidst the music and laughter in her halls, I see a loneliness in Calypso's eyes that mirrors my own. Yet while she longs for a companion, I long for the finite, precious life I left behind. My mind is a sea tossed by storms of memory, haunted by visions of my wife and son. They are the anchors that keep my soul from drifting away on this tide of despair. I am Odysseus, King of Ithaca. I have faced monsters and the wrath of gods. I will endure this beautiful, suffocating paradise and I will find my way home.
