  2. You will complete slides 1-16 of the Greek Theater assignment. You may always go on to any slide.
  3. Read with your group lines 376-595.
    1. Write a one-sentence summary of what happened on that page. Focus on getting the gist of the action.
    2. Fill in the first five boxes of the Exposition column of the Plot Analysis document in Google Classroom.
  4. Brainstorm whether Oedipus is a good leader or not.

Agenda:

  1. Reflect on the vocabulary and types of sentences you have learned about so far.
    1. Choose 5 words that will make you sound intelligent and use them in a sentence.
    2. Choose 3 words that you have never encountered before and use them in a sentence.
    3. Choose 1 word that you don't think most adults know and use it in a sentence.
  2. Choose 5 new sentence types and write original sentences following that pattern.

The Hobbit Essay Day 1

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

After today I should be able to: analyze a theme that runs through The Hobbit.

Reading: You will read one book between now December 11th.

Agenda:

  1. You will take a quiz on the last few chapters of the novel.
  2. You can use this Padlet for quotes for your essay.
    1. PDF of the Hobbit.
    2. Self-knowledge leading to wisdom.
    3. Broader experience leading to wisdom.
    4. Challenges promote growth in courage.
    5. Challenges promote growth in self-control.
    6. Greed has bad effects on the individual.
    7. Greed has bad effects on the group.
    8. Love of beauty
  3. You will write an essay about one of the topics listed above.
    1. Write an introduction that introduces the topic and ends with your thesis. To write your thesis, turn the topic into a Why? question. (ex. Why does Bilbo's self-knowledge make him more wise?)
    2. Write at least three body paragraphs with two quotes each. Include footnotes for your quotes.
      1. The first two sentences should introduce the event you will focus on in the paragraph and how it addresses your thesis.
      2. Two quotes from the book that also provide any context that is needed.
      3. Your commentary at the end of the paragraph.
        1. This evidence demonstrates...
        2. Consequently, if...
        3. Therefore, due to the fact that (EVENT), (STATEMENT THAT TELLS HOW THIS EVENT ADDS SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS EVENTS).
    3. Conclusion
      1. Review the idea you focused on. Summarize how it progresses through the novel. Leave your reader with an application to life outside the novel.
