Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?
After today I should be able to: analyze a theme that runs through The Hobbit.
Reading: You will read one book between now December 11th.
Agenda:
- You will take a quiz on the last few chapters of the novel.
- You can use this Padlet for quotes for your essay.

- Self-knowledge leading to wisdom.
- Broader experience leading to wisdom.
- Challenges promote growth in courage.
- Challenges promote growth in self-control.
- Greed has bad effects on the individual.
- Greed has bad effects on the group.
- Love of beauty
- You will write an essay about one of the topics listed above.
- Write an introduction that introduces the topic and ends with your thesis. To write your thesis, turn the topic into a Why? question. (ex. Why does Bilbo's self-knowledge make him more wise?)
- Write at least three body paragraphs with two quotes each. Include footnotes for your quotes.
- The first two sentences should introduce the event you will focus on in the paragraph and how it addresses your thesis.
- Two quotes from the book that also provide any context that is needed.
- Your commentary at the end of the paragraph.
- This evidence demonstrates...
- Consequently, if...
- Therefore, due to the fact that (EVENT), (STATEMENT THAT TELLS HOW THIS EVENT ADDS SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS EVENTS).
- Conclusion
- Review the idea you focused on. Summarize how it progresses through the novel. Leave your reader with an application to life outside the novel.
