Nuance Academy: Past Participle phrase
After today I should be able to:
Reading: The Odyssey, pages 11-20
Agenda:
- Write 10 sentences that begin with a past participle phrase that tells what was happening BEFORE something else occurred.
- Start with a loose sentence.
- Mr. White carefully planned the stages of his essay, and then he rewrote it.
- Rewrite it beginning with a participle phrase.
- Worried about the approaching deadline, Mr. White began to plan his essay.
- Chased by the angry moose, the hikers scrambled to safety up a tree.
- Baked to perfection, the chocolate chip cookies melted in your mouth.
- Left unfinished on the easel, the artist's masterpiece remained a work in progress.
- Another way to think about his pattern is to imagine an invisible "because" at the beginning:
- (Because he) worried about the approaching deadline, Mr. White began to plan his essay.
- (Because they were) chased by the angry moose, the hikers scrambled to safety up a tree.
- The imaginary "because" tells WHY the second part of the sentence is true.
- Review Notice and Note signposts
- First group comes up with a clear explanation.
- When you rotate to the poster:
- What emoji or symbol would help you remember what this signpost means?
- Add an example of this signpost to the poster. Make sure no one else has already added it.
- When you return to your poster, generate questions for discussion based on what everyone noticed.
- Make sure the questions are open-ended.
- They can't be answered with yes or no
- They can't be answered with one word
- The answer is not obvious
