Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?
After today I should be able to:
Reading: You are currently reading a book of your choice. It should be done by the second week of December.
Agenda:
- Words of the Day
- Vocabulary Review
- Start part two of the play. Read lines 656-747.
- Identify elements of complexity in this play.
- Where do I look for complexity?
- Within a character (internal struggles, many layers)
- In a character's personal relationships (layers or contradictions between characters)
- In a character's relationships with their surroundings (Thebes, law, family)
- In the ideas presented (many sides to the same idea, contradictory forces for the same idea)
- What types are there?
- Layered
- Definition: When a character or event has multiple traits that are connotatively similar (they fit together easily).
- Keywords to use in writing: "in conjunction with," "also," "furthermore."
- Contradictory
- Definition: When a character or event has traits that actively contradict one another (they clash).
- Keywords to use in writing: "although," "however," "even though," "but," "yet."
- Paradoxical
- Definition: When a character or event has seemingly contradictory traits, yet they coexist and are not actually self-defeating; they work together to reveal a deeper truth.
- For example, Oedipus's blindness represents the fact that he can truly see the truth. In this respect he becomes like Tiresias.
- English Journal: Complexity in Antigone
