Thinking about power

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

After today I should be able to: What is the relationship between the characters in Act I and Act II?

Reading: You will read one book by February 10th.



Agenda:

  1. Look at this map for the plot of the play.
  2. Let's think about power: 
    1. List characters that have power in the play. 
    2. What power or powers does he or she have? 
    3. Why does he or she have that power? 
    4. How does he or she use those powers? 
    5. What is the goal? (i.e. This character uses his power in order to get...)
  3. Meter in Shakespeare's plays. We will finish taking notes.
    1. Look for examples of each item from the notes.
  4. We will start Act II today. We will watch a different version of the play, so you can get a sense of the variety (RSC 35:35-47:58).
  5. Paraphrase Gonzalo's speech about his utopia.
