3 Levels Day 5

Big Idea: What is the age of responsibility?
Learning Target: Analyze a complex text by paraphrasing it at three different levels.



Agenda:
  1. To work on your comprehension of a complex text, you will explain it at three levels. To explain something at different levels you have to adjust your language to make it comprehensible to your audience.
    1. Today you will create a script for someone your age.
      1. You can use more complex vocabulary
      2. You can cover more than one topic in your video
      3. Your script should be longer than your last one. You will create a paraphrase of the full paragraph for this video. You will also have at least five slides for this video.
  2. Next, we will continue to work on our comprehension of complex texts. I will read a text to you three times and give you a different task for each reading.
  3. Finally, we will play a vocabulary game with our vocabulary list for this week.

    1. First we will watch an episode of a series produced by Wired called Five Levels. An expert in her field will explain a complex concept at five different levels.
    2. What did the expert do at each level to make the concepts comprehensible to the audience?
    3. You will choose a section of the article and rewrite it at three different levels.
      1. For a five year old
      2. For a twelve year old
      3. For a fifteen year old
      4. You will create a slide deck with one to three slides for each level.
      5. You will record yourself presenting your slides and the text that you wrote.

    1. At 23, police officer Justin McNaull could pursue lawbreakers at 100 MPH but couldn’t rent a car. This is one example of the contradictory, confusing expectations states often place on young people when it comes to age and responsibility.
    2. State and local governments contribute to the problem of establishing a single age of responsibility with inconsistent laws, and those laws are being questioned.
    3. Choose a complex sentence from the primary source about the open door policy for China.

Writing the Essay

Big Idea: How do rhetorical choices convey an author's meaning?
Learning Target: Annotate a text by identifying the author's rhetorical choices.

Annotating a speech

Big Idea: How do rhetorical choices convey an author's meaning?
Learning Target: Annotate a text by identifying the author's rhetorical choices.



Agenda:
  1. Fill out the Reading Progress form.
  2. Rhetorical Analysis introduction lecture. Please finish your notes from Monday. You have slides 9,10, and 11 to finish. Write the summary for your notes.
  3. Make sure you get a copy of the Caesar Chavez speech about Martin Luther King Jr.
  4. You will watch the following videos. Each video will walk you through how to annotate the speech. I will be checking your annotations during Encore when I return.
