- Make a timeline for Eugenie Danglars character using the following chapters: 32, 55, 56, 57, 58, 61
- The "We Know a Secret" Essay (Focus on Dramatic Irony)
- The Concept: Dramatic irony happens when the reader knows a huge secret that the characters in the story do not. In this case, we know Eugenie and Benedetto are half-siblings, but they are about to sign a marriage contract!
- The Prompt: Write an essay explaining how Dumas uses dramatic irony to make the arranged marriage between Eugenie and Benedetto both suspenseful and satisfying for the reader.
- Explain the secret: What do we know about Eugenie, Benedetto, and Madame Danglars that the rest of Paris society doesn't?
- How does knowing this secret make reading about the wedding preparations more suspenseful or cringeworthy?
- Why is this specific, embarrassing situation the perfect punishment for Baron Danglars and his obsession with money?
