Helena's Speech about Love

    4. We will read Helena's soliloquy at 1.2.226-251. Our goal will be to paraphrase what she is saying.

      4. I can guess why Helena thinks that Lysander is playing a trick on her.
  4. Finish your one-pager assignment.
    1. You will choose one of the main characters from the play for this assignment.
      1. Theseus, Hippolyta, Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, Helena, Oberon, Titania, or Puck.
    2. Take out a piece of paper and draw a giant Z
    3. At the top of the Z write the character's name.
    4. On the left hand side of the Z write down three quotes with a citation that demonstrate how this characters usually acts in the play.
    5. On the right hand side of the Z, draw a picture of the character or draw/trace five symbols for the character.

  3. Begin your one-pager assignment.
    1. You will choose one of the main characters from the play for this assignment.
      1. Theseus, Hippolyta, Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, Helena, Oberon, Titania, or Puck.

Meme the Scene

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

Daily Writing: Summarize the scene between Quince, Bottom, and the other actors.



Agenda:
  1. Meme the scene
    1. With a partner, you will find a meme that matches the lines between Theseus and Hippolyta. 1.1.1-19 Look for pictures with romantic longing. I will choose one meme at random. Two students will read the Theseus and Hippolyta lines.
    2. Now we will do a living meme or a tableaux vivant. We will arrange six students to match lines 1.1.20-127. We will need six parts: Egeus and the duke; Demetrius, Hermia, Lysander, and Helena. Other class members will read the lines.
    3. Now everyone will leave but Hermia and Lysander. All guys will read Lysander's lines and all the girls will read Hermia's lines, 1.1.130-142. Our Hermia and Lysander will read 1.1.158-181. What are they saying to each other?
  2. Establishing acting companies
    1. Like the rude mechanicals, each of you will be in an acting group.
      1. You need a name
      2. A regular place to practice
      3. A rotation order for directors
  3. Acting companies at work
    1. You will follow this procedure for reading a new scene
      1. round-robin reading to a period, semicolon, colon, or question mark
      2. circling words you don't know and agreeing on a definition
      3. paraphrasing hard-to-understand phrases into modern English
      4. making sense of the scene
    2. Try this procedure with 1.1.180-250. This should take around 20 minutes.
    3. Post your two best TQEs to the Padlet wall.

  1. IMPORTANT DUE DATE: You need to be finished with your first book by February 3rd. Today we will create a daily reading goal.
  2. Fill out the reading progress form.
  3. Tossing Lines
    1. Divide the class into two groups.
    2. Do you have a word you can not pronounce or you do not know?
    3. Toss the object around the group. When it is thrown to you, you will say your line.
    4. Keep going until everyone has said their line two times or more.
    5. Everyone will write down as many lines as they can remember.
    6. Repeat the previous steps with group 2.
  4. Script in your hand.
    1. How do we find our place in a Shakespeare text?
    2. Act.scene.line = 1.1.25
  5. Read around, 1.1.20-127
    1. Go around the circle. Each person will read until they reach a period or semicolon.
    2. What is Hermia's problem?
    3. Egeus' request?
    4. The duke's solution?
    5. How does the language in this section compare to the scene from yesterday?
    6. prose vs. verse
  6. Fill out the MSND graphic organizer. Look for the characters mentioned so far. Who are they trying to control? Why?
  7. Add to your earlier summary. What is happening at the beginning of the play?
  8. If there is time, we will play a Quizlet Live! game to help us get to know the characters.

Staging the Play

Big Idea: What does it mean to be human?

  1. Play map. In your English Journal, write a summary of the plot of MSND. Make sure you include information from the two settings of the play.
  2. Actor's circle
    1. Read a scene from the play We will read through this scene one more time with 10 new actors.
    2. Bottom (3), Quince (3), Flute, Starveling, Snout, and Snug.
    3. Questions:
      1. Who wrote this play they are going to do?
      2. If Quince wrote it, has he written it all himself?
      3. Has he adapted some of it?
      4. Is it an original story?
      5. What do Snug, Snout, Starveling, and Flute think of the play? What do they think of the tension or lack of tension between Quince and Bottom?
      6. Why might they be so quiet during the scene?
      7. What are they doing during the scene? Do they want to be in the play?
      8. What about their characters?
      9. Is Bottom a bully? A loudmouth? An egomaniac? A good actor who wants to help? A leader?
      10. Is Snug stupid? Nervous? Slow? A new member of the group? Extremely shy?
      11. Is there any poetry in the scene? Is it good or bad poetry?
    4. What words do you not understand?
      1. For our final read through, we will stage the scene.
        1. Where does the scene take place?
        2. Entrances and exits: Who should come onstage from where? With whom? Why? Does the text give you a clue?
        3. Who's the most important person in the scene? Who thinks he's the most important person in the scene? How do you act it out to show this?
        4. How should each character act?
      2. We will choose six actors to act out this scene.
  3. If there is time, we will play a Quizlet Live! game to help us get to know the characters.

      3. What is going on here? What are these guys up to? How do you know?
      4. Do these guys know each other?
      5. Who is the boss of the group? How do you know? Who would like to be the boss of this group? How do you know?
      6. Why are they putting on the play?
    4. Now we will read through the scene again. Look for new information. What did you notice that you didn't understand before? What is still confusing?
